Paolo, known as Dino, was the
seventh child and third son of Marino and Marianna (Pazzini). He was 6 years old in 1908, when the family
moved from Verucchio, Forlì, to live with his uncle, Don Secondo Grilli, a
priest, at his parish rectory, San Gaudenzo, in Montefiore.
Little is known about Paolo’s
childhood. Many happenings occurred such
as those family members leaving home to start a new life in America. His grandmother, Angela (Gai), died in 1912
and his mother, Marianna, died in 1915 from the complications of diabetes. This left him, at 13 years of age, along with
his sisters Francesca (16) and Innocenza (11), with no maternal influence. In a home consisting of his
sisters and himself under the guidance of a strict uncle-priest, an elderly
grandfather and a father, life in Montefiore became difficult.
In October of 1919, four years after his mother died,
Paolo (17) and his father, Marino (53),
left for America. They lived for a while with his older brother, Pino,
and family on Pearl Street in Everett.
Marino went to Worcester, living with his daughters, Caterina and Maria
at different times.
Elizabeth Bertini, born in
New York, came to live on Pearl Street.
It was here they met and on Sept. 12, 1926, they were married and had
one child, Paul, born on Jan. 6, 1928. They lived at 237 Vine St., Everett.
Paolo was a mechanic and
operated a garage in Everett, where he repaired cars. He was a warm, soft-spoken loving man who
endeared himself to all who knew
him. He succumbed to cancer on March 7,
1941, at the age of 39.
Elizabeth died at age 61, on August 10, 1964 and
their son, Paul, died on Jan. 6, 1972 on his 44th birthday.
